While you likely wash your hair at least once per week, you may be rushing through your routine and missing an integral step – leaving your products to sit in your hair.
An expert revealed exactly how long ladies should be leaving their shampoo in before rinsing for maximum benefits.
A hairstylist from Sydney Balayage Hair Salon (@thedenhairsalon on TikTok) advised that it somewhat depends on the specific product you are using.
However, a general rule is that you should shampoo twice, for around 30 seconds to a minute each time – so between one to two minutes in total. This ensures the shampoo can do its job properly.

An article entitled Shampoo and Conditioners: What a Dermatologist Should Know?, published in the National Library of Medicine, outlined why it’s such an essential hair care product.
Experts explained: “Shampoo in simple terms is a hair care product designed to clean the scalp skin along with its hairs.
“Shampoos are used primarily to clean the scalp of dirt and other environmental pollutants, sebum, sweat, desquamated corneocytes (scales) and other greasy residues including previously applied hair care products such as oils, lotions and sprays.
“It is easy to formulate a shampoo which will remove all of the sebum and dirt from the hair and scalp, but this will leave the hair, frizzy, dry, unmanageable and unattractive.
“Shampoo now is also supposed to have a secondary function which serves to condition and beautify hair and to soothe the irritated scalp skin in conditions like seborrheic dermatitis.”
When shampooing, it’s important to employ the right technique, because according to one expert – you’re probably doing it wrong.
Hair and scalp guru Dorian White (@dorian_marie_hair on TikTok), there’s an important step before using shampoo.
Washing once isn’t enough either. Indeed, a hairdresser shared her hair-washing method for “the best hair of your life” – and it includes double cleansing.
After your double shampoo, it’s time to move on to conditioner. According to the expert at Sydney Balayage Hair Salon, this should be left on for between one to three minutes before rinsing.
Celebrity hairstylist and creative education director for Scruples, William Whatley, previously spoke to GB News about how women can achieve “stronger, shiny hair” with an effective hair cleansing routine.

He stated: “I recommend shampooing your hair no more than three to four times a week so as not to disturb the acid mantle of your scalp. Too much shampooing can cause the hair to become too oily or too dry.
“You want to cleanse the hair as gently as possible while giving it the nutrients that it needs.
“Always follow up with a conditioner for one to three minutes – or a leave-in conditioner can be very beneficial too.”
