Collagen breakdown occurs as people age, causing wrinkles and sagginess due to the skin losing its structure.
Trying to combat this can be a mission for women and they often turn to products for support.
An esthetician has shone a light on the issue and shared a series of foods to “naturally increase the amount of collagen in your body and skin”.
Speaking on YouTube, skin care expert Chris Gibson said: “By having collagen-building factors in your diet… you can reverse a lot of collagen loss, build it back up and get much more youthful-looking skin.”
The expert advised having foods rich in vitamin C and sulfur

Foods rich in vitamin C help “build collagen molecules or cells” in the skin.
Chris said: “Foods that are high in vitamin C include: citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons and grapefruits or leafy greens, such as spinach and kale.
“The more vitamin C you have available to your body and your skin, the higher the level of collagen it’s going to be able to produce and hang on to.”
An article published in the National Library of Medicine stated: “Vitamin C plays a critical role in the maintenance of a normal mature collagen network in humans (anti-scurvy properties) by preventing the auto-inactivation of lysyl and prolyl hydroxylase, two key enzymes in collagen biosynthesis.”
Incorporating foods high in sulfur is another option for women to consider. The esthetician added: “Sulfur is essential for healthy collagen production, working in tandem with vitamin C.
“Vegetables that can provide the amount of sulfur that you need in your diet are broccoli, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, cauliflower, red cabbage, leeks, onions and my favourite, garlic. You can get a fair amount of sulfur from chicken and eggs too.”
The expert also encouraged individuals to consume bone broth because of its numerous health benefits.

Chris explained: “Bone broth is one of the main ways that you can supplement your diet easily and without a lot of calories. Bone broth naturally contains all of the amino acids that your body needs for all of the different types of collagen production.”
Aside from collagen production, it supports “bone and joint health, heart health, brain health and your skin”.
Another skin care expert has shared how to prevent elasticity breakdown by cutting out an ingredient from your diet.
Speaking exclusively to GB News, they said: “It’s your skin’s collagen’s worst enemy.”
