New research has found that over half of Britons want cities to have more car-free zones as people become more environmentally conscious and take part in World Car Free Day.

A total of 55 per cent of the nation wants there to be more areas dedicated to reducing traffic and restricting access to motor vehicles.

Around two in five supported the idea of making UK cities completely car-free, with millions around the world supporting World Car Free Day today (September 22).

Cities like Amsterdam and Paris are continuing to expand their car-free zones, while Parisian Mayor Anne Hidalgo is expected to spend €500million (£421million) by 2026 on cycling infrastructure and bike incentives.

Previous research from Swapfiets also found that Britons think roads should be transformed into more green spaces, with two in five supporting this measure.

Other proposals included introducing more cycling and pedestrianised zones (40 per cent) and an increase in the amount of street dining (24 per cent).

Britons also want to see new landmarks, more commemorative statues and sporting facilities to promote active travel and remove cars from roads.

Katarina Hlavata, UK country manager at Swapfiets, said: “It’s encouraging to see a movement of Brits who want to pursue a more sustainable way of life.

“What’s clear from our research is that the way we live, work and socialise in cities is constantly evolving – and we need to change with that evolution.

“Through our Car Free Day initiative and continued Cycle Squad, we want to play our part in building and fostering a community that can help fight for a positive change in the future.”

Cities around the world are taking part in World Car Free Day by encouraging motorists to leave the car at home and walk or cycle instead.

Events are taking place across the UK today, with Britons being offered free bus travel in Devon and encouraged to take part in the Kidical Mass bike ride on the Isle of Wight.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has taken this one step further by urging residents to “reclaim the streets” and swap their cars for active travel methods.

From Friday, September 20, until Sunday, September 22, Londoners are being urged to “play streets for the day” with traffic-free zones in neighbourhoods around the capital.

The celebration will coincide with the official launch of the London Overground line which runs between Highbury & Islington and West Croydon being named the Windrush line.

Hackney Carnival will also return after a five-year absence, with those living in the area encouraged to enjoy the car-free streets as the family-focused street parade takes place.

Commenting on the celebration, walking and cycling commissioner Will Norman said: “The Mayor and I are committed to enabling even more Londoners to incorporate walking and cycling into their daily lives.

“We are delighted to once again be supporting the activation of play streets on Car Free Day, a unique opportunity to transform streets into playful and social spaces, where all members of the community can come together to scoot, bike, walk, space hop and socialise safely.

“I encourage all Londoners to join in the fun and reclaim our streets with this fantastic initiative, which supports our aim for a greener, fairer London for all.”
