Diet is arguably the most important factor when losing weight and making sure you are eating the right foods can be the catalyst for change.

A doctor has shared a “superfood” that can propel people’s weight loss journeys and they probably already have it in their fridges.

Weight loss expert at Dr Frank’s Weight Loss Clinic, Professor Franklin Joseph said mushrooms are an excellent option for slimmers because of their antioxidant components.

Professor Joseph said: “Ergothioneine, predominantly found in mushrooms, exhibits powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These attributes can enhance metabolic processes and support weight loss efforts.”

Many varieties of mushrooms can be added to your meals, which “can be both cost-effective and beneficial”.

The expert advised: “Common varieties like shiitake, oyster, and king oyster mushrooms are all superfoods and particularly high in ergothioneine and are readily available in supermarkets.

“These supplements combine extracts from various mushroom species, potentially providing a higher dose of ergothioneine and other beneficial compounds.”

Before starting any supplementation, it is important to consult a healthcare professional to ensure it is appropriate for your individual health needs.

Mushrooms can be a replacement for higher-calorie ingredients, meaning slimmers “can reduce overall calorie intake without sacrificing flavour”.

The professor recommended: “Using mushrooms as a meat substitute in recipes like stir-fries, stews, or even burgers can be a delicious way to cut calories.”

A study published in the National Library of Medicine said: “The mushroom regime consumers had a lesser body mass index, decreased belly circumference, and increased satiety without diminishing palatability.”

It is important to remember that there are many other components of a weight loss journey, aside from dietary changes.

In other weight loss news, one woman, who shed 6st 4lb whilst in her 40s, put down her success to following four principles. One of these was cutting out sugar.

She said: “I had a sugar addiction most of my life, so I had to stop. Cutting out the cakes, pies, ice cream, sweet treats, I had to let all of that go.

“I tracked my sugar intake and just by cutting out the refined sugars, I stayed within a relatively healthy range of sugar intake for the day.”
