Planting flowers in your garden helps to brighten it up, and a gardening expert recommended a host of plants for people to grow.
Commercial director at Green Feather James Ewens spoke exclusively to GB News and advised planting sunflowers, peonies and daylilies to add colour and texture to your garden.
James said: “Sunflowers are a cheerful addition to any garden and perfect for attracting birds and pollinators. Plant in full sun with well-draining soil.
“They are drought-tolerant but will perform best with consistent watering. Stake tall varieties to prevent them from falling over, and see how high you can get them to grow.”

Peonies are a bit more of a fussier plant but produce beautiful blooms in spring. The flower “requires full sun and well-drained soil” to set it up for growth.
The expert explained: “Once planted, avoid disturbing their roots, so be 100 per cent certain of positioning. Water deeply but ensure good drainage to avoid root rot.
“Daylilies prefer to be in full sun or light shade with well-draining soil, but they are hardy blooms and are drought-tolerant once established and require minimal maintenance.”
For gardeners fancying something other than just colour, some good long-term perennials include lavender and hostas.
James advised: “Lavender is perfect for attracting pollinators. Plant lavender in full sun and well-draining soil – this is ideal for pots as well as flowerbeds.
“It thrives in slightly dry conditions once established. Prune back in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth and prevent it from becoming woody.”
Hostas on the other hand “thrives in partial to full shades and prefers [to be in] moist, well-draining soil”.
The gardener said: “Mulch around the base to retain moisture and prevent weeds sprouting.”

For a bit more structure and foliage, plant hydrangeas and lilacs in your garden, as they can blossom into “stunning blooms”.
James stated: “Hydrangeas prefer partial shade and moist, well-draining soil; regular watering is essential, especially in hot weather. Prune after flowering to avoid cutting off next year’s flowers.
“Lilacs thrive in full sun and well-drained soil; be sure to water them regularly but don’t make the soil too wet. Prune after flowering to shape and encourage future blooms.”
Lilacs are also rather small so are “perfect for [gardeners with] more compact gardens”.
