Youthful and wrinkle-free skin is a desire for all women but the process of achieving this can be complex. They need to know the correct products to use and make sure they contain the right ingredients.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, skin care expert Rebecca Elsdon, explained how women can reduce wrinkles and maintain a youthful appearance.

She said: “Reducing wrinkles requires a holistic approach, incorporating skin care, professional treatments, diet, and lifestyle adjustments. The key to effective wrinkle prevention is to start early.”

Focus on protecting the skin in the morning and using the evening to repair it. One of the ingredients that is recommended to help repair is retinol.

Elsdon said: “For active skin renewal, retinol (or other vitamin A derivatives) are essential. Retinol accelerates cell turnover and stimulates collagen production.”

Retinol can help speed up the process of shedding older skin cells which reveals smoother and silkier skin.

Wrinkles and fine lines are also reduced thanks to the increase in collagen production and it can unclog pores.

Cleveland Clinic said: “Studies show that topical retinoids can help treat acne, acne scars and stretch marks. It can give your skin a fresher, plump appearance.”

To go with retinol, Elsdon advised using products that contain peptides as they can support skin repair and elasticity.

Using peptides in your skin care routine can give your body the chance to create more proteins.

Cleveland Clinic said: “Some studies have suggested that adding peptides can help to dampen down inflammation.”

Elsdon said: “In the evening, prioritise repair and rejuvenation. Double cleanse if needed, followed by active ingredients like retinol or peptides, finishing with a hydrating moisturiser or overnight mask.

Using the right amount is crucial as too much can cause irritation, while too little may not be effective.”

The skin care expert advised to have two to three drops of serums, a large pea-sized amount of moisturiser and at least half a teaspoon of sunscreen for the face.

Research released by the National Library of Medicine illustrated the benefits of peptides and retinol.

It said: “The anti-ageing efficacy of the peptide complex [was shown in] a clinical study performed on normal, healthy volunteers.

“A total of 22 female volunteers with a mean age of 52.4 completed the study, and changes in their face and neck wrinkles were assessed. After two weeks of usage, all of the measured wrinkles were significantly improved.

“Retinoids are commonly known as biologically active anti-ageing molecules. Retinol stimulates fibroblasts to synthesise collagen fibres, improves skin elasticity and promotes angiogenesis. Some studies indicate that retinol also enhances the production of elastin fibres.”
