A man has been arrested after police discovered the body of a woman at a home following a reported ‘domestic incident’.

Emergency services were called to the home on Clements Street in Russell Lea, in Sydney’s inner west, just after 11am on Thursday.

Officers found a woman believed to be aged in her 50s, who is yet to be identified, dead at the scene.

A 42-year-old man who was known to the deceased and understood to be her flatmate was arrested at the scene and taken to Burwood Police Station where he is assisting police with inquiries.

Burwood Commander Superintendent Christine McDonald said he had only been living at the home for about two-three weeks.

She added the woman and three other housemates had moving into the house about five-six weeks prior to the alleged attack.

A neighbour told Daily Mail Australia that they hadn’t seen who was living there at the time but had heard yelling coming the home in recent weeks.

‘It’s a shame it wasn’t reported to police sooner,’ she said.

Officers have established a crime scene after they found a woman believed to be aged in her 50s, who is yet to be identified, dead at the scene

Police will allege the woman died from a stab wound to the neck but had also suffered ‘significant and multiple injuries to her upper body’, Ms McDonald said.

She added that all five tenants were at the time during the attack and are ‘upset’

‘They are … upset. The scene that police arrived to, it is very clear that is a homicide. You can imagine if you were known to the victim, you would be extremely distressed,’ Ms McDonald told reporters.

‘The man that we have assisting police has a non-violent, traffic and drug related history.’

She confirmed the woman and the alleged attacked were ‘not in an intimate relationship’.

A number of items were recovered from the footpath as police cordoned off the street for forensic police and detectives to investigate the scene.

A senior police officer described the scene inside the red brick house as among the worst he’d seen, reported the paper.

Police were seen door-knocking neighbours in the street on Thursday afternoon.

Anyone with information has been urged to contact police.

More to come.
