Homeowners could boost their property value by up to five per cent in 2025 through strategic paint colour choices, according to leading property experts.

A new study showed buyers are willing to pay significantly more for homes featuring light and neutral colour schemes that create a modern, spacious feel.

House hunters will pay, on average, five per cent less for properties with unappealing colour schemes, with yellow being identified as the least attractive option.

With the UK average house price sitting at £267,700, according to the latest Zoopla figures, this would mean a well-decorated property would fetch around £13,385 more.

The colour of paint you choose is important

The director at Good Move Nima Ghasri said: “First impressions count when it comes to selling your home, and the colour of your walls plays a crucial role in creating a welcoming atmosphere.

“Light, bright shades not only enhance natural light but also create the illusion of space, which is a huge selling point to potential buyers.”

The expert warned against using garish colours such as bright pink, neon green, or fuchsia, noting these choices can be particularly off-putting to buyers.

Warm neutral colours like beige and grey can add significant value by creating a cosy and sophisticated atmosphere whilst remaining versatile for potential buyers.

Soft whites are particularly effective at making homes appear more expensive, with experts recommending subtle tints over pure white, which can yellow over time.

These lighter shades help create the illusion of larger spaces, a key factor in attracting buyers. Light and neutral tones also make rooms feel more modern and inviting, addressing key priorities for house hunters viewing potential homes.

While black accents can add sophistication to a room, experts cautioned against using them extensively as this can make spaces feel smaller and more claustrophobic.

Experts at Good Move said: “Black, by its very nature, absorbs light, so use it sparingly to accent rather than paint main rooms in your home.”

Be careful with dark tones

Light colours are particularly valuable as they help potential buyers visualise their own plans for the space, rather than feeling pressured to redecorate immediately.

These shades also play a crucial role in maximising natural light, creating brighter and more appealing living spaces. Space perception is one of the most important factors for potential buyers, with lighter colour schemes helping rooms appear larger and more open.

This strategic approach to colour selection can make the difference between a quick sale and a property lingering on the market, according to the experts.
