Cyprus is one of the most popular expat destinations with several people moving there when retiring.

But knowing what area of the country to move to can be a difficult decision as the country is home to lots of expat hotspots such as Limassol and Larnaca.

Speaking on the YouTube channel, Sander Recommends, expat Jack explained why he chose to move to Paphos as he felt at ease moving there.

Jack said: “We looked at 15 to 20 properties in Limassol but there was no magic there. The salesperson we were with recommended Paphos and we looked at two properties and bought the second one. You feel relaxed here, with a holiday mood and ambience. There was a natural affinity to this location.”

He said one of the biggest benefits of living in Cyprus is that it is very common for individuals to speak English so there is barely any language barrier to contend with.

“The language ability is great and there is an ability to communicate with people. Of all the countries I have visited, the foreigner friendliness is the best in Cyprus.

“It is quite a remarkable revelation for me. You feel welcome here. They don’t mind you being here, they want you here.”

The only times a language barrier is noticeable is in the high mountains and rural villages, but Jack said the majority of expats do not go there.

What might be a concern for some people is how hot it gets in July and August but the expat said that through his experience, he only found it to be very humid.

“Your electricity bill will go up because of the air conditioning and you may spend more time indoors, in air-conditioned restaurants and homes.

“Rarely does the temperature in the daytime drop between 15°C and 16°C in the winter. One of the beauties here is you can go and have a swim in the sea even in the winter months. We know things are getting hotter around the world but so far, Cyprus has not experienced anything which is unbearable.”

The average temperature in July is around 31°C in Cyprus, with it getting to around 22°C during the evenings.

One of the biggest reasons Britons do not make the big decision to move away is not wanting to leave family. However, Jack explained that he is able to frequently visit family in Britain with connections from Paphos.

“One of the benefits of Paphos is Paphos International Airport which we use to go back to visit family,” he said.

“There is no issue travelling around. I understand more ferries are running between here and Greece and various other places. Rarely do you see people talking about difficulties in getting to Cyprus.”

Britons have also been advised by an expat in France of a ‘loop’ that leaves newcomers feeling trapped.
