Prince Harry is set for a tax nightmare as the Duke of Sussex may be forced to give millions to Donald Trump’s US Government.

The royal received an eight-figure sum and an unequivocal apology from News Group Newspapers after agreeing to settle his court case against the publisher of The Sun.

However, after his legal fees have been paid, the Duke of Sussex will have to pay tax on the remaining money in the US as the UK does not tax legal damages, according to a source.

The Sussexes do not have a good relationship with US President Donald Trump, who has publicly criticised Harry and his wife Meghan Markle several times.

The Duke of Sussex’s barrister issued a new statement on behalf of the royal outside the court on Wednesday following the news that a settlement had been reached and that the case would no go to trial.

Prince Harry hit out at the “aggressive and vengeful coverage” of his immediate family following his decision to launch the claim against The Sun over half a decade ago.

David Sherborne read out the statement on behalf of Prince Harry and Lord Tom Watson.

Watson, a former Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, was the only other claimant left, alongside the Duke of Sussex, pursuing the case against the publishers of The Sun.

The statement said: “In a monumental victory today, News UK have admitted that The Sun, the flagship title for Rupert Murdoch’s UK media empire, has indeed engaged in illegal practices.

“This represents a vindication for the hundreds of other claimants who were strong-armed into settling, without being able to get to the truth of what was done to them.

“After endless resistance, denials and legal battles by News Group Newspapers, including spending more than a billion pounds in payouts and in legal costs (as well as paying-off those in the know) to prevent the full picture from coming out, News UK is finally held to account for its illegal actions and its blatant disregard for the law.

“It has also specifically admitted wrongdoing against Tom Watson, and admitted unlawful acts by The Sun, as well as by the News of the World, against Prince Harry.”
