A former Premier League star has been sacked by an EFL club.

The club are currently near the relegation zone and have endured a miserable run of form of late.

Matters have been so bad for the club that they are without a victory since November 9.

The club issued a brief statement in which they confirmed the departure of the manager.

The news came in the aftermath of another defeat which was suffered on Saturday.

A decision has yet to be made regarding who the manager’s replacement will be.

League Two club Fleetwood Town have sacked Charlie Adam. Fleetwood are in 18th place in the table and eight points above the relegation zone.

Fleetwood were beaten 2-0 away by Barrow on Saturday and have lost three of their last four matches. 

A statement on Fleetwood’s official website read: ‘Fleetwood Town can confirm Charlie Adam has left the club with immediate effect.

‘Owner Jamie Pilley said: ‘I’d like to personally thank Charlie for his commitment and professionalism over the last 12 months.

‘He’s been a pleasure to work with but recent results meant we felt a change was necessary.

‘I wish him well for the future.’

‘All at Fleetwood Town would like to thank Charlie for his hard work and commitment.

‘The Club will issue a further update on the first team staff in due course.’

Adam played in the Premier League for Liverpool, Blackpool and Stoke City

Former Scotland international Adam played in the Premier League for Blackpool, Liverpool and Stoke. He won the League Cup with Liverpool in 2012.

Adam made over 200 appearances in the Premier League and scored 34 goals in the division between 2010 and 2018.

After retiring from playing in September 2022, Adam started working as loans manager at Burnley.

He was appointed as Fleetwood boss on December 31 2023 but couldn’t prevent the club from being relegated from League One.
