Most makeup wearers will be familiar with mascara, the staple that enhances eyelashes by adding colour, length, volume and shape.

And if you’re over 50, you’ve likely been using it as part of your makeup routine for several decades.

However, despite it being such a popular product, not everyone knows how to maximise their mascara for ultimate lash success.

A makeup artist spoke exclusively to GB News about how women over 50 can use mascara to their anti-ageing advantage, including the best way to apply it and the product to steer clear of at all costs: non-waterproof mascara.

Makeup artist from False Eyelashes, Saffron Hughes, said: “Ageing is a natural and beautiful process, however, you could be adding years to your face just by the way you apply your makeup when that may not be your intention.”

According to Saffron, mascara can be a “powerful tool for defying the ageing process” – as long as it’s used properly.

The expert stated: “I’d argue that using a mascara wand to enhance your eyes can do more for maintaining a youthful look than a concealer, which is often used to cover fine lines.

“As we age, the skin around the eyes tends to become more hooded and the area beneath our eyes may lose volume, leading to the appearance of darker circles.

“Mascara application effectively draws attention away from these signs of ageing and redirects the focus to the unaffected part of the eye: the colourful iris.”

To enjoy the full anti-ageing benefits of mascara, it’s important to select the right product. Saffron warned that choosing a non-waterproof variety may be a mistake for women over 50.

She explained: “I would always recommend waterproof mascara to my mature makeup clients because if mascara smudges or runs below the eyes, it can undo the anti-ageing effects and create unwanted shadows.”

As for where ladies should focus their mascara, she advised paying “special attention” to the outer third of their lashes.

Women can then complement their mascara with some eyeliner. Saffron stated: “For an instantly wider-eyed appearance, apply pencil eyeliner along the outer third of your lash line.

“This technique enhances the thickness of the lashes on the outer third of your eye, resulting in a broader and more youthful look.”

Saffron also named the popular eye makeup that is making them look “tired” – claiming that “it’s adding years to your face”.

She also spoke to GB News about the eyebrow hack that takes years off your appearance over 50.
