Drivers are being urged to avoid one of the busiest motorways in the UK following a serious collision involving a lorry and a van.
National Highways: North-West has warned that the M6 in Lancashire is closed northbound between J32 (M55) and J33 (Garstang) following the incident.
It reported that all emergency services are in attendance, including Lancashire Police, who are working alongside National Highways Traffic Officers.
At present, motorists are being warned of delays of more than 60 minutes, which could cause havoc for those travelling to work during rush hour.

Writing on social media, National Highways warned drivers that the road is likely to be closed for some time and thanked motorists for their patience.
The M6, which remains closed, is experiencing around an hour’s worth of delays, with congestion now stretching back six miles to J30 (M61).
Traffic caught up within the closure is being released past the scene of the accident as emergency services continue to deal with the incident.
National Highways is warning that the extent is expected to clear at around 11am, while normal conditions are expected to return at around 11.15am.
Lancashire Police also provided an update on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying: “The M6 Northbound between junctions 32-33 is currently closed due to a road traffic collision.
“We anticipate that the motorway will be closed for some time. We’d recommend looking for an alternative route. We’ll update you here once the motorway is open.”
In a statement to GB News, the force said a man in his 50s has been taken to hospital with “serious injuries”. The collision took place on the M6 at around 5.20am.
It added: “The M6 Northbound between junctions 32-33 is currently closed and we anticipate it will be closed for some time.”
National Highways have provided a diversion route, with drivers urged to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol to avoid the area.

- Follow the A6 through Broughton, Barton, Bilsborrow and Garstang
- Rejoin the M6 at J33

- Take the first exit at the roundabout onto the A6 northbound towards Garstang
- Follow the A6 northbound through Broughton, Barton, Bilsborrow and Garstang to then re-join the M6 northbound at J33

A Lancashire Police spokesperson told GB News: “If you witnessed this incident, have any dashcam footage or information that could help, please call 101 quoting log 132 of 5th February.”
National Highways has warned that drivers should allow extra journey time if the closure impacts their planned route along the M6 and surrounding areas.
It added that motorists may wish to consider alternative routes or even delay their journey as a result of the delays.
