Just as your body ages, your skin does too, and your skin care regime must reflect this if you want to look your best over the years.

An aesthetic doctor and anti-ageing specialist shared the best skin practices for women in their 40s, and women in their 50s and beyond.

According to the expert, women in their 50s should make sure they are diligently applying sunscreen – and not just when it’s sunny outside. This can prevent the acceleration of collagen breakdown.

Skin care in your 40s

Dr Keyana Emamian from Este Medical Group advised women in their 40s to focus on anti-ageing.

She explained that after 40, the ligaments in the face start to drop, causing the face shape to change.

In their 40s, women may want to target specific areas of the face, such as under the eyes

Dr Emamian said: “Anti-ageing products may be helpful at this time, as well as targeting specific areas of the face for extra attention such as under the eyes.

“Pigmentation can increase as we age, so products targeting brown spots may be helpful.”

As well as making use of strategic skin care products, the expert advised women in their 40s to consider what they eat.

She said: “Put more focus on your diet and make sure you’re getting enough healthy fats and are drinking plenty of water.”

According to the aesthetics doctor, your skin care regime should be solidified by this age, so keep going.

However, there are a few specific changes women should be aware of so they can keep on top of their skin.

Dr Emamian said: “Women in their 50s may experience hormonal changes with the menopause, which further dries out the skin.

“Invest in good quality products to keep as much moisture in your skin as possible.

In their 50s, women should keep using SPF – even when it’s not sunny

“Keep using SPF, even during the cold, winter months because the sun can help to speed up collagen breakdown.”

The skin care experts at Nivea explained what collagen is and why it is so important. They stated: “Collagen makes up around 80 per cent of our skin.

“Together with elastin (another protein) it’s what gives our skin strength and is vital for maintaining elasticity.

“Largely present in the middle layer of the skin (the dermis), collagen has many benefits for our skin, keeping it firm, plump and supple. It’s also essential in our skin’s natural renewal process, shedding old skin cells and making way for new ones.”

Collagen depletes as we age, and our bodies are not able to replace it as quickly as it breaks down, leading to signs of ageing such as dryness, thinness, loss of elasticity, sagging, fine lines and wrinkles.

In other skin care news, a 60-year-old woman said the skin care strategy she started in her modelling days helps her thrive to this day.
