• Bayern Munich are currently four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga
  • But several players are facing bleak futures under head coach Vincent Kompany

German papers have singled out two Bayern Munich players as the biggest losers under Vincent Kompany so far this season – with one former Premier League star taking the unfortunate accolade just over a year after joining.

Kompany’s new-look Bayern are four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga after a strong start to the campaign and remain on track for direct qualification for the Champions League last-16 despite defeats to Aston Villa and Barcelona.

The former Burnley head coach has often called on the fringe players in his squad with fixtures coming thick and fast, but several first-teamers are facing bleak futures.

Indeed, young forward Mathys Tel has been named as one of the losers by Bild. Without a goal or an assist this year, the 19-year-old could be loaned out in January.

But one team-mate staring down the barrel of a permanent departure is Eric Dier.

Dier, who spent a decade at Tottenham between 2014 and 2024, joined Bayern in January in a shock loan move after being sidelined under Ange Postecoglou. This deal was then turned permanent after just two months, in light of his strong form.

But Eric Dier (centre) is likely to leave in the summer after tumbling down the pecking order

During his heady early months in Bavaria, the 30-year-old battled it out with Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae for a spot in Kompany’s starting XI. However, in recent months, he has slipped down the pecking order.

Kompany has also selected midfielder Leon Goretzka at centre back, ahead of Dier.

As a result, Dier has played just nine games this season, starting twice.

His contract is set to expire at the end of the campaign and Bild have reported that he is unlikely to have a future at Bayern beyond the summer.

It is also thought that Kompany is targeting a swoop for Bayer Leverkusen centre back Jonathan Tah, although reports in Spain claim a deal with Barcelona is close.

In April, Dier waxed lyrical about his form, saying he was in the best form of his career, and insisted his performances merited a shock recall to the England squad.

‘Since the World Cup, I wouldn’t say that I’ve had any dip in form,’ Dier told The Overlap. ‘I’m playing the best football of my career since (Antonio) Conte came (to manage Tottenham in 2021) and I’ve carried it on since.

‘People think that I’m 37 or something, but I’m 30 years old and am nowhere near the end of my prime and imagine that this will be my prime.

‘I want to be a part of the England set-up and I believe that I should be a part of it, that I’m that level of a player.’
