A man allegedly driving a stolen car belonging to a Labor MP’s husband has been left with permanent injuries after he and another man were shot at by police.

Brendon Liebe, a father-of-three, took a bullet to the head in Sydney’s west when police opened fire on an allegedly stolen car containing him and another man as it accelerated towards them on Friday.

Karen McKeown, the state member for Penrith, called police when she realised her home had been broken into and her husband Brendan’s car was missing earlier that morning.

Police followed the car’s tracking device to a carpark underneath an apartment block on Lane Street in Wentworthville, where they allegedly found the men inside the vehicle.

The men allegedly drove the stolen car towards five officers, before three of them fired their guns

They were taken to Westmead Hospital. Liebe, reportedly shot in the head and in a critical condition in intensive care, while the other man was shot in the leg and remains in a serious but stable condition.

Liebe’s mother believes her son will never make a full recovery.

‘My son’s in (a) critical condition because of these police officers shooting him,’ Tracey Liebe said in a video obtained by Nine News.

She has spent the day by her son’s side in Westmead.

‘Even if he does pull through, he’s going to be a vegetable the doctors tell me,’ Ms Liebe claimed, tearing up.

‘He didn’t deserve to lose his life. I want answers,’ she said.

The police officers were not physically injured.

‘Police discharged their firearms, injuring two men inside the stolen car,’ NSW Police said in a statement.

‘The officers immediately rendered first aid until the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.’

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said a critical incident team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will investigate.

In a statement to media, Ms McKeown said: ‘Last night my home was broken into and my husband’s car stolen.

‘I reported this to police.’

‘While I am shaken from the events, thankfully I am unharmed.’

She thanked police for their ‘bravery’ and for responding to the alleged incident promptly.

‘Political leaders often praise police for their bravery. Today, I have had a first-hand experience of this.’

She has postponed an event she was scheduled to appear at on Saturday.

Lane Street was blocked off on Friday afternoon while police officers patrolled the area.

Residents of the unit block were told to stay inside until police are finished with the crime scene.
