The family of a man who was found dead on the M4 last night has been comforted by police as the motorway reopens following an overnight closure.

The busy motorway was closed in both directions on Saturday night after police discovered a body at around 6.30pm following reports from concerned drivers.

Police attended the scene on the carriageway between Junctions 20 and 21 in Gloucestershire and found ‘human remains’.

On Sunday morning, Avon and Somerset Police said they had identified the man, thought to be in his 40s.

The force wrote online: ‘The M4 reopened overnight following a man’s tragic death.

‘The deceased’s next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them.’

The man’s name has not yet been released and officers are still investigating how his body came to be on the motorway.

‘If you were travelling along that stretch of the M4 between 6pm and 6.45pm and have any relevant information or footage, please call 101 citing reference number 5225047292,’ police said.
