A number plate on a luxury car which appears to be in reference to Australia’s social security service has divided the internet.

The cheeky plates CNTRLNK were spotted on the back of a black Mercedes C-Class sedan stopped at traffic lights in Perth on Sunday.

A stunned Aussie shared a photo of the $150,000 vehicle to Reddit.

‘Saw this license plate today,’ they captioned the photo.

‘I very much doubt the owner of this [Mercedes] is on Centrelink’.

Many Aussies weren’t impressed by the plates as the cost of living crisis worsens.

‘It clearly will frustrate those, who are on Centrelink through no fault of their own, or health wise. Hopefully the driver will one day grow up,’ one wrote.

Another added: ‘Yeah like, I get that it’s a joke plate, but there’s something really tasteless about rich people belittling the poor.’

A third wrote: ‘You can’t even buy a Mercedes part on Centrelink.’

Others saw the funny side and commended the Mercedes driver on their sense of humour.

‘It’s a pretty funny plate,’ one viewer wrote.

Another added: ‘Can just imagine some people actually [taking] this seriously.’

Displaying personalised or customised number plates is legal in Australia.

Motorists can apply for customised plates through the relevant road authorities in their state or territory.

Some motorists weren’t impressed by the plates (pictured) while others praised the driver for their sense of humour

Other plates have similarly gone viral, with one motorist praising a driver’s ‘clever’ disguise of a rude word on their vehicle in March this year.

The plate’s numerals and letters – 370HSSV – appeared completely conventional.

However when the plate is flipped upside down, eagle-eyed motorists noticed that it spelled out the word ‘a*****e’.
