Skin care is one of the most important things you can do for your skin, but you need to make sure your products contain effective ingredients.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, a doctor explained the “secret to youthful, glowing skin”, which is particularly important in winter.

Dr Nisa Aslam and skin specialist from leading Japanese skin care range Hada Labo Tokyo explained: “New research from Hada Labo Tokyo has found that a staggering 75 per cent of women notice skin changes throughout the seasons, with two-thirds reporting their skin feels drier, duller and more sensitive in winter.

“What’s more, nearly a quarter go as far as to say with winter skin, they feel they look unhealthy, and 18 per cent say the harsher months cause their skin to break out.

“It’s no surprise our skin feels a little lacklustre in winter – it’s a natural response to the colder weather temperatures and indoor living with central heating.

“But there are steps we can take to ensure our skin is glowing even through the cold winter months.” As skin becomes drier, keeping it well hydrated becomes much more important, the expert explained.

She said: “Hydration is key to looking younger and fighting back against dull skin. The key ingredient for keeping skin hydrated is hyaluronic acid.

“In addition to needing hydration through winter months, as we age, our body’s levels of hyaluronic acid fall.”

Staying hydrated is vital and hyaluronic acid is particularly good at achieving this. It is an ingredient in many skin care products, such as Hada Labo Tokyo Super Deep Hydrator Lotion, and it is also available as a supplement.

Dr Aslam continued: “If you consider that one-third of hyaluronic acid is found in the skin, with hyaluronic acid levels halving by the time we’re 50, then this is naturally going to have a significant impact on hydration levels.”

Research published in the National Library of Medicine delved into the benefits of the topical application of hyaluronic acid.
