While glycolic acid is best known for its benefits on your skin, it can also work wonders when trying to grow “healthier, stronger” hair.

The product can be applied to help exfoliate the scalp and stimulate hair growth.

This is according to Vera Clinic CMO, Waleed Taleb who discussed its benefits in more detail.

He said: “Glycolic acid is a water-soluble hydroxy acid which is derived from sugar cane, according to Verywell Health. In other words, it is a chemical exfoliant that can be used on the scalp to promote healthier hair.

“Once applied to the scalp, glycolic acid removes dead skin cells, product build-up, and excess oils, in turn, unclogging hair follicles and stimulating hair growth. Healthline also reports that glycolic acid can be used to reduce inflammation.”

There are many versions of the product available online and in popular pharmacies. The expert suggested massaging this into your scalp for the best results.

Waleed continued: “To use, start by massaging the acid into the scalp and leaving it on for 10 to 30 minutes.

“It is important to wash it out with a moisturising shampoo and conditioner afterwards.

“However, everyone should conduct a skin test beforehand, always start with a lower concentration of around 5% to 10%, and use the solution a maximum of once or twice a week to avoid chemical burns.”

Experts at Harley Street Hair Clinic discussed more about the potential benefits of using the product for your scalp.

They explained more research is needed, however, the product is hydrating and exfoliating, and has anti-inflammatory properties, which could all be beneficial for your scalp and hair growth.

They stated: “Currently, there hasn’t been much research into how glycolic acid can benefit the hair, but looking at the properties of glycolic acid, you can see how it may help boost hair growth and health as a whole.

“In particular, glycolic acid exfoliates the skin, which means that when applied to the scalp, it will remove dead skin cells and potentially encourage new hair growth. It can also combat too much oil production on the scalp, too.”

It has also been shown to reduce breakage and help with oily scalps, according to the hair experts.
