A man has been charged after a woman was allegedly assaulted and a house set on fire with police discovering the bodies of three dogs inside the wreckage. 

NSW Police were patrolling Kaitlers Road at Lavington, in the state’s south, when they saw smoke billowing from a home on the same street on Friday. 

Officers rushed to the home to find it alight and alerted Fire and Rescue NSW. 

Fire crews extinguished the blaze, but the home was left ‘destroyed’. 

Police were told a 34-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted by a 28-year-old man at the home before it caught fire. 

The man was known to the woman, a NSW Police spokesman said. 

‘There were no injuries reported due to this incident; however, the bodies of three dogs were found inside after the fire was extinguished,’ he said. 

A crime scene was established at the home and officers launched an investigation into the incident.

A 28-year-old man was arrested at Springdale Heights at 4.30pm on Saturday. 

Police took him to Albury Police Station and charged him with six offences. 

They included assault occasioning actual bodily harm, breach AVO (two counts), intimidation, destroy property by fire, and possess prohibited drug. 

He was denied bail to appear before Wagga Wagga Local Court on Sunday.
