A woman and four horses have died after being involved in a fatal collision in the early hours of Monday morning on a popular road.

The crash took place on the A737 in Scotland at roughly 3.10am with emergency services called to the scene.

The collision involved a Mercedes A-Class car and MAN box van as well as six horses which ran loose onto the road from the nearby fields.

Police Scotland explained that it had received a large number of calls to respond to the incident in the early hours of the morning.

The police stated that a 59-year-old woman, who was in the Mercedes alongside two other people at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene.

However, the 52-year-old male driver of the luxury car brand was transported to Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

The third passenger in the car, a 33-year-old male, was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital to be treated. The 59-year-old man driving the van was also taken to the hospital Paisley for assessment.

During the collision, the police said four of the horses were killed while a further two managed to escape and were taken to safety.

The road was eventually reopened at 2pm this afternoon after police and emergency services had finished attending the scene.

Sergeant Jack Swindells said: “We are providing support to the family of the woman who died as our enquiries continue to establish the full circumstances of this crash.

“We would appeal to anyone who was driving on the A737 on Monday morning around the time of the crash who either witnessed the crash take place or seen the horses running on the road.

“Anyone with dashcam footage is also asked to please contact us as soon as possible.”

Traffic Scotland posted on social media earlier: “NEW! 03:42 The A737 Is CLOSED in both directions between Howwood and Kilbarchan due to an ongoing incident, please use an alt route at this time.

“A diversion route is now in place.”
