Wayne Rooney has hit back at speculation suggesting that he took a mystery woman back to his upmarket flat, insisting it’s ‘simply not true’ she entered alone.

Posting on Instagram, the star said: ‘I am aware of a video circulating online. The video shows a man and woman looking around my apartment.

‘The couple kindly gave me a lift home and were in there at the same time as my son who was visiting. Footage is from last summer.

‘It is annoying that at least one newspaper has chosen to edit the footage to make it appear as though a woman entered the apartment on her own.

‘That is simply not true.’

In the clip – viewed more than two million times after being shared on X – Rooney, 39, is wearing a grey tracksuit and baseball cap and can be seen unlocking a door while a woman with strawberry blonde hair waits behind him.

The woman’s face cannot be seen in the video, which then cuts to Rooney inside the flat as he stands in front of a large TV next to a bare stone wall.

The former Man United star – currently manager of rock-bottom Championship side Plymouth Argyle – has been living in an upmarket rented flat in the Devon city since taking over as head coach of the club this summer.

A Plymouth Argyle spokesman confirmed the apartment videos were not recent as Rooney spent Saturday evening with his team in a hotel near Oxford’s ground preparing for the game.

Coleen – who spent Sunday in the director’s lounge at Goodison Park, watching his boyhood team Everton FC lose 2-0 to Nottingham Forest – was ‘unconcerned’ by the video when she saw it online.

A source told The Sun: ‘Wayne was with his son on the night of the videos. He was given a lift home and invited them in as a thank you.’

While his loft-style apartment is luxurious and comfortable, it is a far cry from Rooney’s £20 million six-bedroom Cheshire mansion which boasts a snooker room, a home cinema, indoor swimming pool, an underground spa, wine cellar, a stable area with space for 14 horses and a football pitch.

Away from the training ground Rooney has regularly been spotted on nights out around the city including belting out Ed Sheeran songs during a karaoke night at the Cider Press bar in August.

But his ‘bachelor lifestyle’ hundreds of miles from home has also reportedly been causing concern to those close to him, including his wife Coleen.

Coleen, 38, recently spent a month in the I’m A Celeb jungle where she finished second behind Danny Jones of McFly.

While she was away in the Australian jungle their four kids lived with her parents due to Wayne’s work commitments.

One customer in a bar close to Wayne’s rented home in the city previously told MailOnline that ‘he comes in quite often for a few drinks’, adding: ‘He’s definitely put on some weight since he’s been down here, maybe he’s getting stuck into the pasties.’

Isolated from his roots in Merseyside and after making a slow start to the high-pressure job, since arriving in the summer Rooney has been regularly spotted enjoying nights out in the city’s bars and nightclubs including quiz nights and karaoke nights belting out his favourite Ed Sheeran hits including Shape of You.

Video posted on social media shows Rooney urging the crowd to ‘make some f***ing noise, baby’.

Jarrod Styles, assistant manager of the Cider Press bar, said: ‘He was definitely a better footballer than he is a singer.

‘He was an ideal customer, he was just chatting to people then he got up and sang Shape of You. He was working the crowd telling everybody to join in.’

The nearby Rakuda Bar also shared photos of two different visits from Rooney on Facebook, describing him as ‘Rakuda’s new regular’

After losing 2-0 to fellow strugglers Oxford United on Sunday, Argyle are now winless in their last nine matches under Rooney and recently brought in veteran former Man Utd coach Mike Phelan as his assistant.

Following the latest defeat and amid heavy criticism from fans, Rooney was asked in an interview whether he would consider his position as head coach.

He said: ‘I think you have to look at every possible outcome. I think that’s normal with the results we are going through.

‘You have to feel, can you turn it around, have you got the players to turn it around, can I turn it around, can the coaches turn it around. That’s all stuff we really have to look at.’

One source said recently: ‘Coleen’s told him no more takeaways, so she’s sorting out meal plans as well as making sure he’s busy when he’s not at work’.

After signing a three-year contract with the club, Rooney made the move 260 miles from his family home in Cheshire to a rented seaside flat in the Devon city.

When the move was first announced Wayne, Coleen and their kids Kai, 14, Klay, 10, Kit, eight, and Cass, five had been rumoured to be house hunting in the South West and particularly Salcombe, Britain’s most expensive seaside town nicknamed Chelsea-on-Sea, which is just under an hour’s drive from his new job.

But he and Coleen, also 38, ultimately decided moving the family to Devon would be too disruptive to the kids’ education and eldest son Kai’s promising football career in the Man Utd academy.

In a recent interview, Coleen said: ‘We thought long and hard about it (moving to Devon) but with the kids it didn’t work.

On the same day, Wayne looked under pressure as his team Plymouth Argyle took on Oxford United away at the Kassam Stadium

‘Kai’s now in Year 10 and just starting GCSE prep and everything’s going well with football, and the other boys are all settled at school, so it didn’t seem fair on the children to pick them up and take them away, and start in a whole new place.’

Since getting together when they were 16-year-old schoolkids living in Liverpool’s Croxteth estate, Coleen has had to endure several high-profile alleged cheating scandals – with the footballer making national headlines when he was found to have visited three prostitutes as a teenager.

In 2004 after Wayne, then aged 18, moved to Manchester United, it was discovered that the teenager allegedly paid £140 for sex with prostitute Charlotte Glover, 21.

It was also claimed that at a brothel in Liverpool he slept with Gina McCarrick, then 37, and grandmother Patricia Tierney, then 48.

Devastated Coleen stood by her man but didn’t comment publicly on the claims.

The couple went on to marry in 2008 in a lavish ceremony in Italy aged 22.

But their newlywed bliss was short-lived, as it was claimed in 2010 that the footballer had slept with two more prostitutes while Coleen was pregnant with their first son.

She was forced to reevaluate the couple’s marriage in September 2017 when the former England captain was stopped by police in a car after leaving a nightclub with Laura Simpson.

And in 2021 Wayne hit headlines once again after pictures emerged of the star partying and falling asleep in a hotel room with young women.

Addressing her husband’s behaviour in an interview with British Vogue last year. Coleen said: ‘It’s been a battle at times. I look at [any] situation we’re in and think, ”Could we move forward from that? Is it worth moving forward from that?” I don’t just give up.

‘We’ve never backed away from it.

‘We own it. I remember having a conversation about this with someone and I said: ”Well, do you know what your wife gets up to every day and night? At least I know what my husband’s doing!” It might not be good, but I know. People lie to themselves.’

Speaking in a 2023 Amazon Prime documentary on her husband’s life and football career, Coleen also candidly discussed her husband’s cheating

The mother of four credited her parents Colette and Tony for their support, as she admits part of the reason she chose to stay in her marriage during Wayne’s various cheating and drinking scandals was for their children.

She said: ‘When you’re making those decisions you’ve got to focus on what you want and not other people because you have so many people saying different things to you. ‘Oh why is she getting back with him?”

‘Obviously I listen to the people that matter to me, my mum and dad always give me a positive outlook on things. There’s nothing that we can’t deal with and that’s my way in a situation – let’s sit down and see what we can do and can we make it work? And we have. We’re not the lovey-dovey type anyway, we like to have a laugh and we work well together.’

She adds that there is some element of truth to the idea that they stayed together for their four boys, explaining: ‘That was part of it but also we still love each other.’

‘Hopefully he’s learnt and he doesn’t get himself into any of those horrible situations again. But it’s happened and I’ve got to live with it, if I couldn’t cope with living with it I would have ended the relationship.’
