Travis Kelce has insisted he is happy with his role on the Kansas City Chiefs after becoming the franchise’s all-time leading touchdown scorer in the Christmas Day win over Pittsburgh Steelers.

Kelce hauled in a franchise record 77th receiving touchdown, overtaking Tony Gonzalez as the Chiefs beat the Steelers 29-10 to lock up the AFC’s No. 1 seed.

It was a highlight for Kelce in what has been a tricky season individually compared to the heights he hit last year but finished Wednesday’s game with eight receptions for 84 yards.

At times, he has struggled to link up with quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his three touchdowns could be a new career low – he has never finished a season with fewer than five.

But despite seeing less of the ball, Kelce is happy as long as his team are winning.

‘I’m happy with my role right now,’ he said after the Steelers game. ‘I’m out here helping this team win football games.

‘We’ve got a lot of good tight ends, we’ve got a lot of wide receivers that are getting open and doing great things with the football.

‘And Pat (Mahomes) is playing at his best going into the playoffs. It’s a year a little bit different than others but it still a blast coming in every day.’

The 35-year-old also discussed the growth of the team across the course of the season as focus now sharpens on the playoffs.

‘It’s fun building the chemistry of a team,’ Kelce said. ‘I can look back at a lot of teams we had success on and those were the most fun teams to be on.

‘You could feel it in the building and right now, it is such a blast coming in and going to work with the guys that we have.

‘It’s more unique and more different than any year I’ve ever been a part of. The chemistry is at an all-time high right now.’

The Chiefs round the regular season out against Denver Broncos on January 5 and have a bye in the playoffs due to their seeding.
