An Australian woman has died after a snorkelling boat carrying 13 tourists capsized off the Indonesian island of Bali.

Anna Maree, 39, from Canberra, reportedly died after being thrown overboard when a large wave hit the boat, Sea Dragon 2, about 8.30am local time on Friday.

The boat was carrying 11 other Australian tourists when it overturned on its way to Nusa Penida, a tiny island about 15km east of Denpasar.

Gabriel Hijniakoff, 29, from Brisbane, and Cintamani Warington, 32, an Australian living in Bali, were injured in the incident.

The two injured Australians suffered burns to their upper thighs, possibly due to the heat from the engine, according to local police.

They were treated at Griya Medical Clinic and will be flown to Denpasar.

Indonesian authorities released photos showing terrified tourists climbing on and sitting on top of the overturned boat.

Others can be seen still in their snorkelling gear swimming towards the vessel.

Some of the group were snorkelling underwater when the boat was hit by a large wave that threw Ms Maree overboard.

A second wave then hit and capsized Sea Dragon 2.

A nearby boat, owned by the same company, came to save the survivors as rescuers found the body of Ms Maree.

The capsized boat was recovered and towed to Toyapakeh Harbour.

Boating accidents have killed hundreds of people in Indonesia in recent years due to boats being overcrowded and loose safety guidelines.

Nusa Penida is a picturesque island on the southeastern side of Bali and is separated by the Badung Strait.
