• Painter fell from ladder at job site last week
  • Died in hospital on Monday
  • WorkSafe investigation launched

A painter who fell from a ladder at worksite last week has died in hospital.

The man aged in his 60s suffered critical injuries while using an A-frame ladder at a site in Mandurah south of Perth last Thursday.

He was rushed to hospital, where he lost his fight for life on Monday.

A WorkSafe investigation into the tragedy is now underway.

Commissioner Sally North has expressed her condolences to the man’s family and friends.

It wasn’t the only workplace-related fall last Thursday.

Worksafe has launched a separate investigation after a young tradie fell nine metres from a community centre in the Perth suburb of Brentwood last Thursday.

The man, 18, was doing roofing work on the centre before he fell through the roof and onto the sports court below.

The Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union has renewed calls to for the state government and building authorities to improve safety guidelines in the wake of the latest incidents.

Three fatal incidents relating to workers falling through fragile roof materials or roof openings were recorded in WA last year.

‘We have campaigned tirelessly to create awareness around the inherent dangers of working at heights, and to prevent needless deaths resulting from inaction and the abuse of basic safety guidelines that exist solely to put a stop to tragic outcomes such as these,’ CFMEU WA state secretary Mike Buchan told The West Australian.

‘How many more lives and families need to be destroyed before somebody gets the message?’

‘This is a dire situation, the numbers continue to climb . . . another day, another incident. It’s just not good enough.’
