The Premier League’s expected points table for this season so far has been revealed after a supercomputer ran thousands of predictions with some surprise results being discovered.

Liverpool are table-toppers heading into the second international break of the season with new boss Arne Slot enjoying a dream start to his managerial reign at Anfield.

Manchester City and Arsenal follow behind with just one point separating the top three teams after seven games, while Chelsea have starred under Enzo Maresca’s guidance.

Erik ten Hag’s third campaign at Manchester United was expected to see them push for the title but have instead endured their worst-ever start to a Premier League season and remain 14th in the standings.

But, Opta’s supercomputer has crunched the numbers and have predicted that while some clubs are performing as expected, others might consider themselves lucky to sit as high as they do.

The expected points model uses statistics from the season so far to simulate where each of the 20 competing teams should be sitting based on the expected goals (xG) value of each shot taken, with each match simulated 10,000 times.

The computer model has picked Liverpool to top the table going into the international break based on their performances so far, in a rare instance of reality matching up with the data provided.

Chelsea – spurred on by Cole Palmer’s sensational goalscoring form – might feel hard done by sitting in fourth, when Opta’s expected points table has them sitting second.

Should the Blues live up to expectations, chasing the league leaders would mark an outstanding result for Maresca after a turbulent few years at the club.

The Blues are currently predicted to sit above their London rivals, Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta’s side – who sit third in the table –  down in 8th position by Opta’s metrics after a number of bitter clashes that have seen the Gunners escape at the last.

The stats have Pep Guardiola’s City side dropped to third place from second, with Tottenham fourth and Aston Villa fifth.

Fulham and Bournemouth can be buoyed after strong starts to the season, and both improve their positions using the data from eighth to sixth (Fulham) and a whopping 13th to seventh place, in the case of the Cherries.

Mikel Arteta hopes Arsenal can win the league title but are simulated to sit mid-table now

Man United’s disastrous start to the new Premier League season seems somewhat unfair

Equally disgruntled might be Manchester United, who could be as high as 10th place were they living up to their xG metric.

At the other end of the table, Wolves, Leicester and Ipswich occupy the relegation places, the two promoted sides likely counting their blessing that in reality, those spots belong to Crystal Palace, and Southampton.
