Sir Jim Ratcliffe has risked infuriating his Man United squad by singling out five stars as ‘not good enough’ and ‘overpaid’.
The United co-owner hinted that he was looking to move players out of the door by adding that that club ‘have to sort that out.’
Last month, Man United announced plans to make up to 200 more redundancies, with staff expected to learn their fate in April. Those redundancies follows 250 job cuts made last year under Sir Jim and Ineos.
Britain’s richest man has presided over a series of savage cuts including staff being informed they will no longer benefit from free lunches from the canteen.
And Sir Jim seemed clear to deflect the blame towards his players in an interview with the BBC.
‘If you look at the players we are buying this summer, that we didn’t buy, we’re buying Antony, we’re buying Casemiro, we’re buying Onana, we’re buying Hojlund, we’re buying Sancho. These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we’ve inherited those things and have to sort that out,’ he said.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has given a withering assessment of his Man United squad in an interview
‘For Sancho, who now plays for Chelsea and we pay half his wages, we’re paying £17m to buy him in the summer.’
‘It takes time for us to move away from the past into a new place in the future.
When asked whether he was suggesting those players were not good enough for Manchester United, he said: ‘Some are not good enough and some probably are overpaid, but for us to mold the squad that we are fully responsible for, and accountable for, will take time.
