Schools in are on lockdown in the Welsh town of Aberfan after a “serious assault”.

Armed police and a helicopter have rushed to the scene.

South Wales Police said: “Emergency services are responding to serious assault that took place on Moy Road, Aberfan, Merthyr just before 9.10am this morning.

“Armed officers are in the area, and we request that people avoid the area so that we can effectively deal with this incident.

“More detail will follow as soon as available.”

Afon Taf High School, Greenfield Special School and Trinity Childcare have all gone into lockdown.

The assault is understood not to relate to any of the education outlets with the lockdown taken as a precaution.

Afon Taf High School said on social media: “The school is currently on lockdown due to a police incident in the village.

“All pupils are safe. Please do not contact pupils as everyone is fine.”
