Meghan, Duchess of Sussex appears to have sent a “warning shot” to the Royal Family regarding her Sussex title, according to a royal insider.

The duchess made her feelings clear during a filmed exchange with American actress Mindy Kaling.

She promptly corrected her guest, insisting: “It’s so funny you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m ‘Sussex’ now.”

The exchange occurred during the second episode of Meghan’s series, where she was demonstrating how to host a children’s party.

During a casual conversation about childhood favourite fast foods, Kaling repeatedly referred to her host as “Meghan Markle”.

This appeared to irritate the Duchess, who had reportedly only met Kaling once before.

After her correction, Meghan explained the title’s significance: “I didn’t know how meaningful it would be to me, but it just means so much to go, ‘This is our family name. Our little family name’.”

Kaling responded somewhat stiffly: “Well, now I know, and I love it.”

Meghan further emphasised the importance of her title in her only print interview promoting the series.

She told People that the Sussex name now held deeper significance than she had anticipated before becoming a mother.

“It’s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn’t recognised how meaningful that would be to me until we had children,” she said.

Referring to her husband and children, Meghan added: “I love that that is something that Archie, Lili, H and I all have together. It means a lot to me.”

She concluded that the Sussex name “is part of our love story”.

A royal insider told the Mail that Meghan’s emphasis on the Sussex title was “clearly a warning shot”.

The source suggested she was making a very public point about how much the title meant to her and, by implication, to Prince Harry.

According to the insider, stripping the couple of their titles could potentially be used as a sanction if the Sussexes publish more tell-all books about the Royal Family.

Similar consequences could follow if they agree to further explosive interviews in the style of their previous broadcast chat with Oprah Winfrey in 2021.
