Robbie Williams has caused a stir on social media after claiming he will perform at next year’s Super Bowl half-time show – before later revealing it was a joke.

The former Take That star announced X just days after this year’s Super Bowl which saw Kendrick Lamar perform.

Williams penned on X on Wednesday afternoon: “OMG. I’ve just been asked to do next year’s halftime at the Super Bowl. So honoured guys. Thank you.”

The post quickly generated attention from fans across the globe, with many taking the Angels singer’s announcement at face value.

Even celebrity faces were quick to fall for the prank, as former EastEnders actress Samantha Womack wrote: “Congratulations you legend!”

“WHAT?!!!!!!!! Seriously ?? That’s INCREDIBLE!!!!!’ wrote one excited supporter before another added: “It would be the best one in years!”

However, some social media users urged caution about taking Williams’ post seriously as one specifically pointed to potential cultural differences in humour interpretation between British and American audiences.

“Be careful… Americans don’t always get the humour,” they warned.

Proving to be right, Williams later penned another post on Thursday which read: “I’m not doing the Super Bowl halftime show. I got bored and decided to get into trolling.” (sic)

Fans were left devastated as some noted they felt “let down” by the news, whilst others applauded his joke.

This year’s big game at the Super Bowl saw the Kansas City Chiefs beaten by the Philadelphia Eagles, with a staggering score of 40 – 22.

Whilst there were mixed viewers about Lamar’s performance, Roc Nation announced on X: “We’ve broken the record again!

“The most watched Apple Music Halftime show EVER, with 133.5 Million viewers.”

However, one person who certainly wasn’t impressed by the performance was Oasis star Noel Gallagher who slammed the show.

Speaking to Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent on TalkSPORT, Gallagher said: “I had to switch it off. It was absolute nonsense

“I didn’t watch it all, I just switched it off. There were like 300 people getting out of a car in the first two minutes”, he said.

The musician made it clear his dislike extends beyond this particular performance and added: “I don’t like the half-time nonsense, it’s usually artists I don’t like.

“I never watch it, I’m not interested in it.”
