They may be some of the most famous faces in the world.

But these celebrities often suffer cases of mistaken identity.

From Katy Perry pretending to be Zooey Deschanel to get into clubs, to Liam Neeson signing autographs as Ralph Fiennes, many stars get confused for others.

Now, the Greek Golden Ratio of Beauty has been used to reveal exactly which celebrity doppelgangers look the most alike.

This mathematical equation was devised by the ancient Greeks to measure beauty.

The ratio can be applied to almost anything and was even used by Leonardo Da Vinci for the perfect human male body in his famous work, the Vitruvian Man.

According to the analysis, Dylan McDermott and David Schwimmer are the male stars who look most alike.

Meanwhile, Emma Mackey and Margot Robbie top the list for similarity amongst female celebrities.

The premise behind the Golden Ratio is that the closer the ratios of a face or body are to the number 1.618 (Phi), the more beautiful they become.

For the study, the team at Spin Genie applied the ratio to pairs of celebrity doppelgangers.

‘They measured the distance between features like the eyes, nose, mouth, and overall face length to give each one an overall facial proportions ratio,’ Spin Genie explained in a blog.

‘According to this mathematical concept of ideal proportions, the doppelgangers with the closest ratios look the most alike.’

1. Dylan McDermott and David Schwimmer

Actors Dylan McDermott and David Schwimmer take the top spot, with a difference of just 0.01.

The news will likely come as no surprise to the stars, who are often mistaken for one another.

Henry Cavill and Matt Bomer are next on the list, with a difference of just 0.02

Despite a 51-year age difference, Mick Jagger and Harry Styles round out the top three

For example, Piers Morgan famously ‘spent five minutes at an Oscars party in 2020 congratulating a bemused David Schwimmer on the success of the Friends reunion.’

‘[I] later discover[ed] it was his thespian lookalike, Dylan McDermott,’ he added, describing his realisation as ‘mortifying.’

2. Henry Cavill and Matt Bomer

Henry Cavill and Matt Bomer are next on the list, with a difference of just 0.02.

‘Cavill, who is currently developing a Warhammer 40,000 film and TV series with Amazon, has a ratio of 2.03, and Magic Mike star Matt Bomer 2.01,’ Spin Genie explained.

‘Interestingly, the pair have also portrayed Superman, Cavill in the DC Extended Universe and Bomer in Superman: Unbound.’

In an interview with The Project in 2021, Fisher said she has learnt to laugh about the constant comparisons.

‘We laugh about it because Amy has blue eyes and I’ve got brown, our husbands have laughed about it, too,’ she said.

=3. Ana Gasteyer and Kathryn Hahn

Finally, Ana Gasteyer and Kathryn Hahn are the third pair to share third place on the list.

This will come as no surprise to Hahn, who says she’s ‘always confused’ for Gasteyer.

Speaking on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast, she said: ‘I’m always confused, and flatteringly so, with Ana Gasteyer.

‘We always are confused with each other.

‘She will send me pictures of Starbucks cups that say Bad Moms like, “I love Bad Moms,”.’

How is the Golden Ratio measured?

Pictured: an expression of the golden ratio

The ‘golden ratio’ is a mathematical formula devised in ancient Greece to determine ‘physical perfection’ by comparing measurements, ratios and symmetry.

During the Renaissance, artists and Architects used the equation, also known as Phi, as an aid during the creation of their masterpieces.

Scientists have since adapted the mathematical formula, which equates to 1/1.618, to explain what makes a person beautiful.

The length and the width of someone’s face is measured and then the results are divided.

Measurements are then taken from the forehead hairline to the spot between the eyes, from the spot between the eyes and the bottom of the nose and from the bottom of the nose to the bottom of the chin.

A person is considered to be more beautiful if the numbers are equal. Attention is then given to the symmetry and proportion of the face.

George Clooney and supermodel Bella Hadid score highly using the formula.
