Princess Anne has stepped out to support King Charles during the annual Commonwealth Day Service of Celebration at Westminster Abbey despite other members of the Royal Family being absent at the event.

The Princess Royal, 74, was alongside Queen Camilla, Princess Kate and Prince William for the major occasion.

Among the absent members were the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, who are the only working royals not to be at the service.

Buckingham Palace has not confirmed why Prince Edward, who is celebrating his 61st birthday today, or Duchess Sophie were not in attendance.

Prince Andrew, the second eldest child of the late Queen Elizabeth, was not at Westminster Abbey.

The royal, who was stripped of his military titles and patronages two years after stepping back from senior working duties, keeps a low profile and is rarely seen outside his residency at Royal Lodge.

Andrew’s image was further damaged when it emerged he had links to an alleged Chinese ‘spy’ forcing the duke to withdraw himself from Christmas celebrations with King Charles and the Royal Family at Sandringham.

Upon arrival at Westminster Abbey, Their Majesties were met by the Dean of Westminster.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were also present alongside senior royals.

They were the first to arrive at Westminster Abbey, followed by the Princess Royal.

Guests of honour among the 2,000-strong congregation included the Commonwealth Secretary General, Baroness Scotland, the Commonwealth Secretary-General Elect, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, High Commissioners, senior politicians and dignitaries from across the UK and the Commonwealth.

British political figures among the guests include Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and the leader of the opposition, Kemi Badenoch.

Over 700 school children and Commonwealth Games Athletes, including Sir Chris Hoy and Shanice Beckford-Norton, were also attending.

The service is broadcast live from Westminster Abbey on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
