GB News stars Tom Carver and Emily Carver have evaluated the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision to buy a holiday home in Portugal.

Carver said the decision may show a desire from the couple to “align themselves with Europe” as Britain’s relations with the continent become increasingly fraught amid the Brexit fallout.

But Tom was sceptical about the thought, noting Portugal’s long-standing alliance with Britain.

“Apparently Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have bought a pad in Portugal”, said Emily.

“They’re going to have a little bit of a bolt whole there. Do they want to align themselves with Europe rather than the United Kingdom?”

Tom waded in: “Portugal. The oldest ally of England. 800 years we’ve had a military alliance with Portugal.

“I think this is more to do with Portugal standing by us during the continental system of Napoleon, which we routed.”

Buying a holiday home in Portugal may secure the couple a Golden Visa for European Union access.

This would mean visa-free access to the EU’s Schengen area.

But they are not the only royals to have obtained Portuguese property, with Harry’s cousin, Princess Eugenie, owning a home in the CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club with her husband, Jack Brooksbank.

The couple, along with their two sons, August, three, and Ernest, 16 months, dip between their Portugal and London residences.

Harry and Meghan remain close to Eugenie, and a recent visit to Portugal prompted speculation that they stayed with the royal.

This visit may have been one for the couple to explore potential properties or finalise their purchase.

According to royal reporter Charles Rae, Harry and Meghan “would have got a discount” if they used Brooksbank’s help in making the purchase.

Rae explained: “Surprise surprise that they’re using their relatives who’ve got it. Jack and Eugenie have got a house there, and he represents the company in whose house he has bought.

“So it’s only natural to think that Harry and Meghan are going to be neighbours to the couple.”
