Manchester United legends Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt have claimed that they find the ‘Class of 92’ tag ‘cringe’.
Scholes and Butt are two of United’s famed Class of ’92, and played major roles in the Red Devils dominating the first two decades of the Premier League.
Along with David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and Phil Neville, the duo have been immortalised within football history for their contributions at United.
However, despite the high acclaim towards the Class of 92, both Scholes and Butt recently admitted that they don’t like the tag.
Speaking on the Football’s Greatest Eras podcast, Scholes asked Butt: ‘Did you like that Nick? I didn’t like that’.

Butt replied: ‘No, I don’t like it’. Scholes then said: ‘I don’t like it now’.
Butt continued: ‘I cringe when I hear it. But it is what it is. It’s what we’ve been known for since we all came through with Sir Alex Ferguson.
‘And yeah, it’s something that I do cringe about and it just becomes something probably bigger than it really was, if I’m honest with you’.
Scholes then responded: ‘Do you know why I feel bad about it? Cause there was like another 10 or 15 of us the same year’.
‘Yeah,’ said Butt. ‘I also think it seems like we were the ones that won it but if it wasn’t for older pros and the more experienced players there would’ve been no ‘Class of 92’ I’d say.
‘But yeah, a bit cringey for me, but it is what it is and that’s what we’re known for and embrace it, I would say’.

Both players were vital cogs in United’s system during the years under Sir Alex Ferguson. Scholes won 25 trophies across 718 games, while Butt played 387 games and won 14 trophies.
Scholes and Butt often reflect on their times at United together on the podcast and recently revealed their picks for the most ruthless player axeing of the Ferguson era.
They selected Jaap Stam and Roy Keane as particularly unlucky in receiving a brutal addressing from the former United head coach.
