South Australia Police are investigating the ‘unexplained death’ of a man who was found injured, unresponsive and surrounded by blood on Sunday morning.

Police and paramedics were called to a walking path between Brougham Place and King William Road in North Adelaide after reports a man had collapsed.

The man, 54, was unresponsive when the emergency services arrived, and paramedics gave him CPR for a half hour.

Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead after he was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

‘We know he was found collapsed at about 7.35am in the garden by three members of the public,’ Detective Inspector Fraser Huntley told reporters at the scene.

‘We are asking for anyone on O’Connell St, Brougham Place or Brougham Gardens between the hours of 6am and 8am to contact police.’

Amid a huge police presence at the scene on Sunday afternoon, Inspector Huntley said there was no indication any weapons were involved.

‘At this stage, until we have a post mortem tomorrow, it’s an unexplained death,’ he said, standing in front of a large area cordoned off for the investigation.

Inspector Huntley said the Marden man was on his ‘usual walk’ and that the Major Crime squad is assisting the local Eastern District police force with its investigation.

The police and SES volunteers spent several hours combing through the surrounding area on Sunday.

Inspector Huntley said the SES was helping to ‘see if there were any items of interest’ in relation to the man’s death.

Witnesses visiting from Melbourne told The Advertiser they saw people standing around someone lying on the ground as they passed by just before 8am.

‘There was someone getting CPR for a while,’ they said. ‘Lots of police.’

Hundreds of football fans walked by the scene on their way out of Adelaide Oval after the Crows versus St Kilda game.

Anyone who was in the area early on Sunday morning who might have noticed anything suspicious is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
