An Oklahoma University rugby player and National Guard member has died at just 23 years old after he was found in a parking lot with extensive injuries on March 2.

The Norman Police Department responded to the 911 call and rushed rugby player, Joe Pal, to a nearby hospital for live-saving medical care.

Pal was found unconscious with severe injuries and underwent emergency brain surgery the following morning. Despite life-saving efforts, his family announced that his ventilator would be removed.

Police haven’t publicly shared who they believe assaulted Pal or what their motive was. The investigation is ongoing and hasn’t been formally ruled a homicide.

Investigators haven’t found any video footage of the alleged assault and are working to put a timeline together of the events that occurred before Pal was found. Police added that those allegedly involved are cooperating in the investigation.

In addition to playing rugby, Pal was a member of the National Guard. He shared on his Instagram account in March 2022, that he had finished training to become a Combat Medic.

Members of the National Guard serve under the president and state governors. They are called up for emergencies such as natural disasters, and military operations overseas.

In his final act of service, his family announced that they would be donating Paul’s organs.

An honor walk was organized for Friday evening to memorialize Pal as his body was carried to the operating room.

The team shared that any teammates or members of the community were welcome to attend the walk and say goodbye to Pal before the family removed his ventilator.

‘We know Joe was loved by so many people and we want to give everyone a chance to say goodbye,’ Pal’s family said in a statement shared by the Oklahoma rugby team.

‘We are planning to donate his organs and tissues as Joe would’ve wanted to make as big of an impact -on as many people – as he could.’

The family went on to say that they would let the public know six hours before they removed Pal’s ventilator.

Oklahoma Rugby paid tribute to their teammate, writing on Instagram, ‘Joe, your passion, strength and spirit will never be forgotten. Sending our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones during this time. Rest in Power.’

Kind words have already begun to flood in from the community, with teammates and friends sharing stories about Pal.

The Oklahoma Rugby team said Pal was one of the ‘toughest and most dedicated guys’ in a GoFundMe fundraiser
