National Highways Traffic Officers are also in attendance to assist with traffic management operations.
Collision investigation work is currently ongoing at the scene, with authorities unable to give an exact reopening time.
Now drivers have been urged to plan ahead and consider alternative routes due to the extended closure period.
National Highways has also advised motorists to allow extra journey time if their planned route is affected by the closure.
The timing of the reopening will depend on the completion of the collision investigation and subsequent road clearance operations.
Motorists travelling northbound are being directed to follow a specific diversion route, marked with a hollow circle symbol on road signs.
The diversion takes drivers off the M6 at Junction 10A onto the M54 westbound, continuing to Junction 2.
From there, drivers should take the third exit onto the A449 northbound, continuing to the Gailey Roundabout.
At the roundabout, motorists should turn right onto the A5 eastbound.
The final leg of the diversion directs traffic along the A5 to M6 Junction 12, where drivers can rejoin the motorway northbound.
Southbound traffic is being diverted via an alternative route, marked with a solid diamond symbol on road signs.
Drivers heading south should then exit at Junction 11, taking the fourth exit onto the A460 westbound.
The diversion continues along the A460 westbound to M54 Junction 1, where motorists should take the first exit onto the M54 eastbound.
