Manchester City want a straight loan deal if they are to land Douglas Luiz from Juventus this month and hold an interest in team-mate Andrea Cambiaso with a view towards the summer.
Cambiaso withdrew from Juve training on Tuesday due to an ankle injury that has plagued him for over a month, with the full back having been playing with painkilling injections.
City are pessimistic about the prospect of signing the 24-year-old this month but, while not yet tabling an official offer, are keeping an eye on developments in Turin were an initial valuation of around £59million to drop.
Luiz, the former Aston Villa central midfielder, is available to the Premier League champions if they decide the Brazilian is the right man to bolster their options in that area of the pitch.
Juventus are understood to want an obligation to buy at the end of the season inserted into a deal were City to loan the 26-year-old.
