You may have been using a tried and tested makeup routine for decades now, but according to experts, what worked for you in your 20s, 30s and 40s may not have the same effect in your 50s and beyond.
A makeup artist spoke exclusively to GB News about how women in middle age and above can use makeup to their advantage, potentially taking years off their appearance.
Saffron Hughes from FalseEyelashes stated: “Ageing is a natural and beautiful process, however, you could be adding years to your face just by the way you apply your makeup when that may not be your intention.
“The way we do our makeup should change with age, and by following some professional advice and doing it properly, it can deliver a fresh face.”

According to Saffron, one of the “common mistakes that can add years to your appearance” is not fixing your thin eyebrows.
The expert said: “As we age, our eyebrows tend to thin naturally. For youthful-looking brows that also frame your face, take a fine brow pencil and create small strokes to give the illusion of a full and slightly arched brow that is going to lift the face.

While this can be slightly time-consuming, it’s certainly worth the extra few minutes. Indeed, according to Saffron, the “difference is magic”.
Woman over 50 should also ensure their perfect brows complement their eye makeup.
Saffron spoke to GB News about the popular eyeliner trend that is making middle-aged women look “tired”.
She warned: “Heavy liner can age the eyes in so many ways. Darker colours not only shrink the eyes but can also create darker shadows around them, giving an illusion of tiredness.”
Now this doesn’t mean women over 50 should neglect their eyes when applying makeup. They should simply opt for more natural shades over darker tones.

The expert advised: “Adding a nude or pale eyeliner in the waterline can make the whites of your eyes pop, therefore appearing more awake.”
As for eyeshadow, the makeup guru suggested going for a smoky brown colour, and applying this with a small pencil brush for a “precise but clear line”.
A second makeup artist shared the concealer trick she uses to look “10 years younger”.
Advising against caking the product on, the expert said: “The secret isn’t heavy makeup – it’s about using the right products to enhance your natural glow.”
