Stellantis has unveiled its first in-house autonomous driving technology that allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel and eyes off the road at speeds up to 37mph in urban areas.

The new STLA AutoDrive system, revealed by the global automotive group, represents a significant advancement in automated driving capabilities for city environments.

The technology enables fully autonomous operation in stop-and-go traffic, with the system managing all driving tasks whilst active.

Designed to work in challenging conditions the tech can be used during night-time driving and in adverse weather such as light rain or road spray.

When activated, the system allows drivers to temporarily disengage from driving duties and focus on other activities while the technology takes control.

Drivers can use their time to watch movies, catch up on emails, read a book or simply look out the window whilst the vehicle manages routine driving tasks, according to the brand.

Ned Curic, Stellantis Chief Engineering and Technology Officer said: “Helping drivers make the best use of their time is a priority. By handling routine driving tasks, STLA AutoDrive will enhance the driving experience, making time behind the wheel more efficient and enjoyable.”

A physical button allows drivers to activate the system, which then takes control of maintaining safe distances, adjusting speed, and managing steering and braking based on traffic flow.

STLA AutoDrive utilises an advanced suite of sensors to maintain continuous monitoring of its surroundings, ensuring precise awareness of traffic conditions.

The system includes an automated sensor-cleaning mechanism to keep critical components clear, maintaining optimal reliability and functionality.

At higher speeds, STLA AutoDrive provides Adaptive Cruise Control and lane-centring functions in Level 2 (hands-on) and Level 2+ (hands-off, eyes-on) modes.

The cloud-connected system enables continuous improvements through over-the-air updates and real-time data integration for optimised performance.

Stellantis is also researching enhanced off-road automation capabilities for select models within its vehicle range. All automated features are designed to maintain safety whilst providing drivers with enhanced comfort and convenience during their journeys.

STLA AutoDrive has been designed for deployment across Stellantis’ extensive brand portfolio, which includes manufacturers like Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, and Jeep.

Regional laws regarding driver conduct, including restrictions on phone use, are fully respected by the technology. Stellantis has not yet announced a specific timing for when the technology will be introduced to its production models.

The system will be adaptable for global markets across Stellantis branded vehicles, with rollout planned to align with market demand and commercial strategies.
