He obliged, and took to the Old Trafford pitch during the game, which was won 3-1 by Brighton as the mixed start to Ruben Amorim’s reign continued.

It was also the first game at the ground since the passing of Dennis Law, with tributes paid to the former United star during the weekend and prior to kick-off of the game on January 19.

Littler still nonetheless travelled to the ground to watch the game and present the trophy mid-game, and he has now opened up on the event – which included meeting one of the greatest United managers of all time.

‘It was probably one of the best moments of my life and will live with me forever,’ Littler said. ‘I was scheduled to parade the trophy before kick-off but Denis Law had passed away. There was an empty seat there where Denis would have sat on matchday.

‘I sat behind Sir Alex Ferguson and was chatting to him for a bit, which was good. It’s one of the best things I have ever done.’

United continue to struggle under Amorim, losing at the weekend against Crystal Palace as they suffered a 2-0 home defeat.

They remain in a period of transition, with Amorim trying to build his squad after branding them ‘probably the worst’ that the club has ‘ever’ seen.

Among those players are a number of youngsters, such as Amad Diallo (22), Alejandro Garnacho Alejandro Garnacho (20) and Leny Yoro (19).

Littler, as a man who has faced plenty of pressure already in his career, gave some free advice to the young players who are trying to help United improve.

‘I just don’t listen to social media,’ he said. ‘That’s one of the big things.

‘In the football world, it’s totally different. You have to keep your head down. When it’s a darts game, you are on your own. When it’s United, you have a whole team around you, so they must stick together.’
