Kansas City Chiefs star Mecole Hardman revealed that he ‘blacked out’ after scoring the Super Bowl-winning touchdown Sunday night.
The Chiefs sealed a stunning overtime 25-22 Super Bowl victory against the San Francisco 49ers when Patrick Mahomes connected with Hardman in the end zone in the dying seconds.
However, the wide receiver was slow to celebrate the win, later revealing that he was unaware his touchdown had sealed back-to-back Super Bowl victories for the Chiefs.
‘I ain’t gonna lie man, I caught that pass and I blacked out,’ he said on CBS’ postgame show Sunday night following the victory.
‘I didn’t know what was going on until I saw Pat running to me and I was like, “Oh, we just won? Let’s celebrate!”

Hardman was slow to celebrate until quarterback Patrick Mahomes came rushing in
He echoed his claims Monday, speaking to CBS Mornings the day after winning the Super Bowl.
‘I remember everything up until after the catch,’ he said. ‘I knew the play call. I knew the quarterback drop back. I knew the ball was going to come to me.
‘But when I caught the football, I completely lost in reality and finally I saw Pat come to me and that’s when the celebrations started.’
Hardman pulled off into space down the right when Mahomes found him with a simple throw that put him in over the line and moving the reigning champions into a final three-point lead.
The 25-year-old appeared unusually stunned as he slowed down after the match-winning score before realization set in and he was mobbed by Kansas teammates.
This was the first match played under the new overtime rules introduced in the playoffs that guarantees both teams a possession to try and score a touchdown with the extra period played in four 15-minute quarters.
Hardman lifts the Lombardi Trophy after clinching victory for the Chiefs and his teammates
Super Bowl MVP, Mahomes, revealed in a post-game interview that his wideout was unaware he had just won the game.
‘Can I tell a quick, funny story?’ Mahomes said on NFL Network after lifting the Lombardi Trophy.
‘I threw a touchdown to this dude [Hardman[ to end the game and he looked at me and he had no idea.
‘I said, “Dude, we just won the Super Bowl.” He had no idea. He didn’t even celebrate at the beginning. I’m like, “What are we doing?”.
Hardman first joined Kansas in 2019 as a rookie but dropped out of a starting spot and joined the New York Jets for the 2023 season before eventually returning to help the Chiefs win the Super Bowl.
Mahomes dashed over to celebrate with Hardman, who he praised speaking to the press
Mahomes expressed his gratitude later when speaking to the press: ‘I don’t know if it was this week, man. I played with Mecole for a long time, man. He’s always ready for the moment, and he’s someone that continues to practice hard and get better.
‘And obviously, that receiver rotation, we were bouncing around a lot of guys all year long, and those guys just continue to work. And, I mean, just like last Super bowl, man, it’s like, you never know who it’s going to be.
‘It’s about everybody being ready for the moment, and he was ready for that moment in a couple of big plays.’
Kansas City stars later went out into Las Vegas to celebrate their third Super Bowl triumph in five-years that saw them produce a stunning comeback at the Allegiant Stadium.
