The actor who played Vice President JD Vance in the adaptation of his memoir thinks Hollywood needs to shut up about politics.
Gabriel Basso, 30, portrayed Vance in the 2020 adaption of Hillbilly Elegy before the politician was elected to the Senate.
Despite acting as the politician throughout his law school days, Basso doesn’t believe Hollywood should be involved in politics and that his fellow actors should ‘shut the f**k up’.
‘You should be quiet, you should do your job. You should be a jester, entertain people. Then shut the f**k up,’ he told the podcast Great Company.
‘We’re court jesters. We’re entertaining. We’re public servants. We’re there to perform, to entertain,’ he continued. ‘And then all of a sudden, the jester – because he’s in the courtroom – starts to be like: “I might want to go sit on the throne!”
‘Like no, we’re not supposed to be there… We’re saying words that we’re told to say. We’re told how to say them, we’re told where to stand. And then we’re telling people how to vote?’
Basso and Vance have met in person, and the young actor said the politician was a ‘cool dude,’ but said it was ‘weird’ to now be wrapped up in the VP’s story.
‘When he’s thinking about his life – they made a movie of his book, and my name will always be in the description. We talked a little bit. He’s a cool dude,’ he told Variety.

They bonded over both growing up in the Midwest and the woods, he told the outlet. Vance grew up in Ohio and Kentucky, while Basso grew up in Missouri.
Basso’s criticism didn’t stay in Hollywood, as he slammed public officials for not representing the people.
‘You need us, like you should be representing me in a form of representative government. What are you doing?’ he said. ‘It feels like they’re dictating us.’
After Hillbilly Elergy, Basso moved on to lead Netflix’s The Night Agent, which recently ranked in the Top 10 twice in the same week.
The Night Agent’s second season had topped the streaming platform’s top 10 TV series in the US following its January 23 release.
However, in a rare feat, millions of fans also tuned into the show’s first season, which too has become a top 10 watch in the US, according to Tudum.
Vance, on the other hand, is also making ways at the Munich Security Conference.
The vice president took his culture war to Europe on Friday, warning that its greatest threat came not from China or Russia but from within.

Vance said free speech and Democratic institutions were being eroded in an address to the Munich Security Conference.
‘Europe faces many challenges, but the crisis this continent faces right now, the crisis I believe we all face together, is one of our own making,’ he said.
‘If you’re running in fear of your own voters, there is nothing America can do for you, nor, for that matter, is there anything that you can do for the American people who elected me and elected President Trump.’
