While washing your hair may seem like a simple task, there are many traps you can fall into which reduce its benefits.

An expert from Vida Labs Australia – which formulates cosmetics including shampoos and conditioners – revealed that “we are all shampooing wrong”.

According to Vida Labs Australia (@vidalabsau on TikTok) the “secret” to great hair is double shampooing.

Hair care enthusiasts were warned: “If you’re only shampooing once, you could be missing out on essential benefits.”

The first round of shampoo removes “residue and build-up”, while the second “actually cleanses and nourishes your hair”.

“If you’re someone that goes two or three days between washes, your hair might need that deeper clean,” the expert advised.

Other signs you might benefit from a double shampoo include if the product isn’t lathering well or if your hair does not feel too clean after a shower.

The expert concluded that while all hair types could use a shampoo, rinse and repeat, it’s best reserved for those who do not wash their hair every day.

The practice of double cleansing the hair mirrors the practice of double cleansing the skin.

While the first cleanse removes your sunscreen and makeup – plus the skin’s natural sebum – the second cleanse cleans deeper in the pores and removes bacteria and sweat.

In the comments section, the expert clarified that you only need to condition once per hair wash.

Your shampoo routine should precede conditioner, which is described as “shampoo’s luxury-loving sister” by the experts at Head & Shoulders.

They said: “Its job is all about moisturising your hair and making it look shiny and feel soft and touchable.

“It’s a step that lots of people don’t think they need, although it can have great benefits for your hair, helping to keep it in tip-top shape.”

Using the right amount of conditioner is essential. For long hair, the experts advised using enough to fill the palm of your hand. For shorter hair, aim for walnut size.

But while conditioning may seem simple, the mistake you’re probably making causes hair loss and dandruff.
