A common tip for women is to make sure they are frequently changing the shampoo they use when washing their hair.

A dermatologist has shared a shampoo technique she uses, rotating between two types of shampoos which leaves her hair feeling softer and smoother.

Dr Jenny Liu explained on YouTube that she uses a moisturising shampoo and an anti-dandruff shampoo.

The doctor said that whilst she does rotate between shampoos, she sticks with the two main principles of hydration and anti-dandruff.

“I want to keep my hair healthy and reduce dryness but then I also suffer from dandruff and greasy scalp. This is why I cycle between the two shampoos.

“I will use an anti-dandruff shampoo once or twice a week and I will also incorporate a hydrating shampoo or bond-repairing shampoo that is more gentle but still gets your scalp clean because a healthy scalp is really the start of growing healthy hair,” explained the doctor.

She said that if women are prone to having dry hair, they should focus on a moisturising shampoo in their routine, a few times a week or once a week.

Depending on how frequently individuals wash their hair, will ultimately depend on the frequency of when a hydrating shampoo is applied.

“These hydrating shampoos do have additional ingredients that may strengthen your hair at the same time you are cleansing your scalp.

“A hydrating shampoo can feel like a conditioner and will soften plus detangle hair. When I critique my hair on a more detailed level, I notice less breakage and split ends,” said Dr Liu.

She said to try and find a shampoo with citric acid inside of it due to the benefits it possesses.

Citric acid can help with reducing frizz, removing product buildup on hair and fighting against dandruff.

If women want to go one step further, the dermatologist advised sleeping on a pillow which has a satin or silk pillowcase.

Dr Liu said: “The reason for a satin and silk pillowcase is that it has a lower friction coefficient compared to cotton. What that means is it does less frictional damage on hair so when you’re sleeping on it, your hair is gliding and it’s less likely to roughen up the cuticles.

“My hair feels noticeably soft and smooth in between hair washing whilst sleeping on the pillowcase and my hair retains more of the moisture which is why it feels softer.”

Women have also been advised by a model in their 50s to avoid a colouring mistake.
