The right haircut can feel completely life-changing. When used correctly, a pair of hair scissors can complement your best facial features, disguise signs of ageing, generally elevate your look and give you a huge confidence boost.

According to Dawna Jarvis, a master hairstylist who has been in the industry for 30 years, a specific chop can be particularly transformative for mature women.

Asked which haircut she would recommend for over 50s, Dawna praised face-framing layers. These, as defined by the beauty gurus at L’Oréal Paris, are the “shorter pieces of hair strategically cut around the face for body and movement”.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, the guru revealed that these can help to conceal crow’s feet, the wrinkles which creep in at the sides of the eyes.

Praising haircuts that create instant “movement”, Dawna encouraged women in their 50s and beyond to avoid styles that fall “straight down”.

She explained: “Sometimes a straight part and straight down hair can really elongate and kind of hollow out your face.”

A haircut that has this effect may not be the most helpful for mature women, especially as their skin takes on inevitable signs of ageing.

Indeed, the experts at Harvard Medical School explained: “When we’re young, fat in the face is evenly distributed, with some pockets here and there that plump up the forehead, temples, cheeks and areas around the eyes and mouth.

“With age, that fat loses volume, clumps up, and shifts downward, so features that were formerly round may sink, and skin that was smooth and tight gets loose and sags.

“Meanwhile other parts of the face gain fat, particularly the lower half, so we tend to get baggy around the chin and jowly in the neck.”

Therefore, a haircut that lifts the face is going to be more flattering than one that drags it down.

According to Dawna, anything that adds movement and volume is a win – think layers or bangs.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, Dawna issued a warning to women over 50 who are considering dyeing their hair.

Claiming that “it’s making you pale and showing off your roots”, the expert named the “unflattering” colour to avoid.

She also provided some timeless advice for ladies of all ages, cautioning that a seemingly harmless salon habit is leaving your strands “dead and broken”.

While knowing what to say at the salon is essential, the benefits of boosting your hair from within should not be overlooked.

Women over 40 have been told they can “encourage hair growth and support glowing skin from within” with collagen-boosting foods.
