Heathrow is eyeing up expansion plans after a record-breaking Christmas rounded off its busiest ever year.

Bosses at the airport – which saw passenger numbers hit an all-time high of 83.9million in 2024 – are in talks with the Government over a third runway to boost capacity.

Chief executive Thomas Woldbye plans to improve existing infrastructure – including a £2.3billion upgrade announced last month – while drumming up support for another runway.

Passenger numbers in 2024 were 3m higher than the previous peak in 2019 before Covid 19 struck.

Heathrow, which is Europe’s busiest international airport, expects to welcome 84.2m passengers this year.

Bookings for 2025 are off to a strong start, with demand driven by those planning holidays to lift the January blues.

More than 7m passengers travelled through Heathrow last month, making it the airport’s busiest December ever.

And 160,000 customers used the airport on Christmas day – a 13 per cent increase on the peak recorded a year earlier.
