Gary Neville appeared on stage as a special guest during Saturday night’s gig by indie rock band The Reytons at Manchester’s Aviva Studios.

Just hours before the Sky Sports pundit was due at Old Trafford to provide coverage of Manchester United vs Arsenal as part of Super Sunday, the 50-year-old former right back was seen bouncing around while strumming a bass guitar.

Neville’s appearance caught many fans by surprise. However, it was actually announced back in September last year that he would be joining the band from Rotherham during parts of their Right Back At It tour of the UK.

After real bass player Lee Holland was pictured in hospital with his left arm in a sling, The Reytons’ social media channels had posted a video of a spoof interview, which included them asking Neville: ‘What are you like actually on bass?’

Neville replied: ‘I’ve never played bass in my life’, before lead singer Jonny Yerrell comically declared: ‘You’re in!’

On Saturday, Neville joined the band on stage for their performance of Low Life, which has lyrics including: ‘He’s a low life, dirty little low life. Yeah, the boy is everything she dreamed, I’m sure.’

Reacting to his appearance on Saturday, one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter): ‘Gary Neville coming on stage for The Reytons with a guitar certainly wasn’t on my 2025 bingo card’.

Another fan added: ‘Gary Neville just appearing out of nowhere during The Reytons gig may be one of the greatest things I’ve ever experienced’.

However, former Newcastle and Man City midfielder Joey Barton was less impressed.

Barton tweeted: ‘In Manchester tonight. Someone’s d***head uncle has got on to the stage with these young lads in a band. Get him home. Air guitar in ya 50’s? Sausage’.
