Finding cost-effective methods and easy solutions to look after orchids is a desire for lots of gardeners.
A YouTuber has shone a new light on the issue and has shared their simple way to create an ideal mixture which is perfect for orchid care.
The gardener, from the YouTube channel Duc Hoa Lan, explained how to create an onion peel juice solution which contains several significant benefits for orchids.
They said: “It helps orchids grow healthily and produce many new roots. The tree will sprout and bloom many brilliant flowers. It is a great natural fertiliser for orchids.”
The expert shared that onions are packed full of nutrients which orchids love

To begin with, people will need two jars, big enough to hold a large quantity of water and a couple of onions.
The expert said: “To make this fertiliser, you first need to peel the shell of the onion. The onion contains essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium which help plants grow healthily.
“Sulfur compounds can also be found in onions and they have antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, helping protect orchids from common diseases. Onion extracts can stimulate the growth of new roots helping orchids thrive.”
Next, gardeners should put the onion peels into the jar and fill it with a litre of boiling water. Stir the solution then cover it and let it brew for two hours.
“After two hours, open the jar with the onion peel juice in. Filter the residue into a separate jar and keep only the clear water,” explained the YouTuber.
Make sure that you take out the onion peel and just keep the onion mixture before moving on to applying it.
Once the solution is set, the expert said: “Take a small amount of the mixture in a small glass. Use a soft cloth and onion peel juice solution then gently wipe the top and bottom of the leaf.
“When wiped on leaves, this solution helps provide nutrients directly, increases leaf health and supports more effective photosynthesis.”
You can also use a spray filled with the onion solution on your orchids

The nutrients from onion peels also help leaves become greener, shiny and healthy, with leaves that rarely yellow or wilt.
The content creator said: “The natural smell from onion peels can help repel some harmful insects protecting plant leaves from their attacks.”
Gardeners should apply the mixture to their orchids in the early morning or late evening to avoid sunlight as water spots or leaf burns are possible if exposed.
If short of time, people can use a spray bottle and spray the plant rather than patting it down with a small cloth.
